A Distinctive Figurative Universe

Julie Buffet is a French contemporary artist whose work explores human identity, emotion and the relationship between figures and their symbolic environment.

Originally trained in architecture and interior design, she developed a strong sense of composition, balance and space before dedicating herself to painting.

Human figures stand at the centre of her artistic language. Sometimes contemplative, sometimes powerful or mysterious, they inhabit richly coloured environments where patterns, landscapes and symbolic animals become part of their identity.

Her paintings invite the viewer into a world suspended between reality and imagination, intimacy and strength.

HUMAN FIGURES & SYMBOLIC ANIMALS

A Dialogue Between Human Nature and Instinct

Animals play a fundamental role in Julie Buffet’s work.

Tigers, dragons, horses, bulls, dogs and other creatures appear alongside human figures as symbols of strength, instinct, protection and personality.

Rather than simply accompanying the human figure, they become part of the story and contribute to the emotional and symbolic meaning of each composition.

This relationship between human figures and animals creates a recurring dialogue throughout her work — between strength and vulnerability, instinct and reason, movement and serenity.

Her Yin and Yang works particularly explore this search for balance, bringing together human figures and animal symbolism within the same composition.

CULTURES IN DIALOGUE

From Asia to the Mediterranean

Julie Buffet draws inspiration from a wide range of cultural references.

Asian imagery, Japanese-inspired figures, dragons, traditional garments and decorative motifs coexist with influences from Spanish and Mediterranean culture.

These references are never treated as simple reproductions. Instead, Julie transforms them through her own visual language, creating imaginary characters and environments where different cultures naturally meet.

COLOUR AS AN IDENTITY

Colour is one of the defining elements of Julie Buffet’s work.

Intense reds, deep blues, turquoise, pink, orange and green interact across her canvases, while fragmented shapes and textile-inspired patterns give rhythm to her compositions.

The contrast between figurative subjects and almost abstract areas of colour creates paintings with a strong visual presence.

From intimate portraits to larger compositions, each artwork is designed to create an immediate emotional connection with the viewer.

“Colour is not simply decorative — it becomes part of the narrative.”

FROM PAINTING TO VOLUME

Extending the Artistic Universe

Julie Buffet’s creative universe also extends beyond painting.

Through ceramic sculpture, characters and animals originally imagined on canvas take on a new physical dimension.

Working with clay allows the artist to explore volume, texture and material while preserving the colourful and expressive identity of her paintings.

Her sculptures create a natural dialogue with her paintings, translating the same characters, symbols and emotions into three-dimensional form.

Painting and sculpture therefore become two expressions of the same artistic world.
